What type of boat and motor for a lake?
I'm going to use It to for tubing and wakeboardin so I want speed I heard about the yamaha 150? But some tips please an how long? Outboard or inboard?
1st off, if your main use is to pull anything around, you dont want an outboard.
inboard or sterndrive (AKA inboard/outboard).
if you are really planning on doing mostly watersports, inboard. something like a sanger ski boat (excellent quality hull, powered by merc who is #1 for many good reasons).
if you really plan on doing a lot of wakeboarding, you possibly want one of the V drive models. V drive the motor is in the very rear which helps to make big wake for the rider to jump. ballast tanks, on both sides in the rear, and a belly tank will also help to make BIG wake when you want it, even with a direct drive model.
personally, i highly perfer the direct drive. much easier to access everything on the motor, i could have the entire motor and tranny out in about 30 minutes on one of those, and no V drive to buy or maintain.
but, sterndrives tend to be most all around useful boats.
far better fishing boat then an inboard, yet still very capable as a ski boat. and a bowrider floor layout has plenty of room for passengers.
if it was me, i'd get a fuel injected 4.3 v6 powering merc's alpha one drive in a 19 footer. all the power you need to ski with, but a little easier on the wallet when at gas stations then the usual v8's in larger hulls and most inboards.
either way you go, get one with a factory installed ski tower on it. ski towers help pull the rider UP instead of just forward at water level. makes it much easier to get up on skis and wakeboards to begin with, and easier to catch big air with anything.
if its not factory installed, the hull may not be structally able to support it. it would rip loose sooner or later. i've seen that, and had to attempt to fix it seamlessly, NASTY thing to have happen.
BTW, if you werent interested in skiing or wakeboarding as much, more tubes and kneeboards, a smaller aluminum hull with a smaller and much more economical outboard can get you plenty of speed.
i have a 16' alum hulled fishing boat i sometimes kneeboard behind. little 60 hp merc outboard pushes that boat up to about 40 mph, nearly as fast as the vast majority of boats can go and nearly twice as fast as it NEEDS to go to pull a rider behind it.
6 gallons of gas in it will last longer then 30 in a 5.7 v8 powered ski boat.......
