If buying a new boat, is it better to get an outboard, 2 stroke or 4 stroke,?
Which engine manufacuter would you recommend?
1st off, outboards and the 2 vs 4 stroke:
2 stroke motors are lighter, and will get you moving a touch quicker still, probably to a higher top speed as well.
new 2 strokes are usually direct oil injection, a seperate tank you fill with oil and it automatically mixes it with the gas. so, no more having to worry about adding the right amount of oil to your gas tank.
4 strokes however are much, much cleaner running.
and in the long run, emissions is something they are just gonna get more and more concerned about.
some lakes already ban 2 strokes completely. with a 30+ year lifespan out of well maintained outboard, you dont want one you cant use 20 years later.
4 strokes are also getting closer and closer to closing that performance gap completely. 10 years ago, 2 stroke no questions about it.
today, i wouldnt buy a 2 stroke if it was half the price of a 4 stroke. but not everybody agrees with me.....
the types:
there are basically 3 types of boat motor/drive systems.
outboard. usually great fishing boats, and very poor ski boats. but usually the most fuel effecient, and long run easiest to totally replace (an alum hull will outlast its original motor and drive system, and still be in good enough shape to repower).
these are often the most fuel effecient. and sometimes the fastest boats on the water (for under $100,000). with just 60 hp, my alum hulled outboard powered boat can go 40 mph, with just 60 hp......
sterndrive, also called inboard/outboard. usually good multi purpose boats, they can ski, they can fish, and they can just cruise with a full load of passengers. but they arent GREAT at anything.....
depending on boat size, sterndrives can be anything from a small 4 cylinder (about 160 hp), a mid sized v6 (a little over 200+ hp), or a couple of different v8's, either small or big block, with anything from 250-400 hp.
regardless of motor, they all go about 45 mph.
the smaller motors are more fuel effecient. but i would go with the 4.3 v6 with fuel injection. the 4 cylinders tend to be rougher idling, carb only (needs adjusted if you travel to different elevation), and can have more starting/stalling problems.
and inboards.
most commonly found in ski boats, such as the quality built sangers or the suCKpremes.
best type for skiing and wakeboarding. possible to fish off of them, but they dont troll and they dont go into tight shallow areas where fish often hide.
and then there are also pontoon boats. can be sterndrive or outboard.
either way, they are total cruisers. not good for teh tight areas, not fast or agile and therefore not good ski boats. but they can hold a LOT of people. floating party porches.
as for brand of motor/drive, merc.
#1 selling brand in marine power. for good reason.
an EXCELLENT warranty and above and beyond customer service combined with a very reliable product.
mercruiser for the inboards or sterndrives. mercury for the outboards.
