saltwater fishing boat for sale
Good fishing spots in Jacksonville, FL?
I was just wondering if anyone would know some good fishing spots in Jacksonville, FL. I do not have a boat so it;s gotta bo onshore. I tried Mayport and Huganot but havent caught much. Mainly im looking for flounders and sheepshead. Also advice on rigs and bait is welcome, Thank you!
HOW you fish the Jetty's and surrounding creek mouth's, (like Sister's Creek Park and Haulover), is vital to your success.
You have 2 options- Live Bait or Artificial/Lures. BOTH can be VERY productive.
Here are some productive rigs and techniques for Sheeps and Flounder.
Flounder:
1. The #1 rig for Flounder is the saltwater version of the Carolina Rig. The only difference between a saltwater Carolina rig and a freshwater is the length of the leader and the type of hook. Therefore, you will want to use a leader that is 18-25" long and a Barrel sinker 1-2OZ.
As for hooks, it depends on what your using for bait. For Mud-minnows a 1/0-2/0 Kahle hook can work well. When using 4-5" Finger Mullet, the preferred hook size is 3/0. You can also use a 2/0-3/0 light wire Circle hook.
A live Finger Mullet is the best bait for Flounder. They are "hardy" and last a long time. However, you probably won't find any at a baitshop. You will have to use a cast-net and catch your own.
Mud-minnows are the 2nd best bait. They are almost as hardy as F. Mullet but lack the larger "profile" big flounder prefer.
Live Shrimp CAN be used, (esp on a Slip-bobber rig). But, rarely do they work better than Mud-minnows or Finger Mullet. Due to all the Pinfish and Sailors Choice in the water, they just end up getting immediately eaten. If your gonna use Live Shrimp you need to rig them on a 1/2-1 OZ chartreuse colored Jighead, (a lighter 1/4OZ size can be used in slow-current areas)- http://www.basspro.com/Kalins-Ultimate-Saltwater-Bullet-Jigheads/product/10209858/-1743157

Sheephead:
1. Believe it or not, but a 12-14FT, (heavy duty) Cane Pole is awesome for Sheephead. Why? Large Sheephead like to hang around Jetty rocks and bridge/pier pilings. If you cast your line in the middle of that type of structure, you'll lose your rig every time. The next time you go to the baitshop look around to see if they have any heavy-duty Cane Poles for sale.
Otherwise, you CAN use a Slip-Bobber rig, (esp around the creek mouths of Sister's & Haulover). The best hooks to use for Sheephead is a 1/0 light-wire "sharp" Circle Hook.

If you use one of these rigs your success rate is going to improve 75%.
Understand- the fish around Mayport, (and the surrounding creeks) are pounded by fishermen relentlessly. If you plan to catch them, you MUST stay on the cutting edge of gear and lines. Fluorocarbon leaders are a MUST in most situations.
