How do you prevent large saltwater fish from going under your boat and snapping the line?
Had this happen to me twice , we tried to reposition the boat but it was too late.
If the fish is charging the boat and looks like it's going to go under, move toward the nearest end of the boat (bow or stern) and guide the fish around. It's called "following your fish", but in actuality you pay attention to where the fish is going and keep ahead of it, which both keeps the fish from getting under the boat, and helps you bring it in quicker. I've caught tuna and marlin to over 100 pounds doing this, sometimes having to go around a boat 3 or 4 times. If the fish is close to the boat and you can't get around to the other side in time, simply hold your rod straight down over the side to keep the line clear as you move toward the end. If it's circling near the surface right under you, hold the rod down as it goes under -- but if it's close enough to be in danger of scraping the hull, it's close enough for the deckhand to get it with a gaff. Most big fish will shy away from the hull, so keeping the rod tip down will most likely prevent any scraping.
Of course, the above really only works with stand-up fishing.
If you're in one of those fighting chairs which are bolted to the deck and you can't move unless the boat moves, or a boat where you can't walk around the bow or stern, it's the captain's responsibility to keep the boat out of the way of the fish. Top big game captains actually try to run the boat parallel to the fish to help bring it in quickly (which is better for the fish in a catch and release situation) while keeping the fish from getting too close to the boat.
But sometimes no matter what you do, the fish will find a way to get away, especially with big fish.
