saltwater boats
What will I have to do to my 15' freshwater boat or engine to get it ready for saltwater boating?
The boat is aluminium V-hull and the engine is a 9hp Mercury
nothing before use but after u need to clean it and flush the motor with fresh water to prevent corrosion

SeaCraft Boats Run Hard
I recently built a small wooden rowboat for use in saltwater. What do I prime the bare wood with before paint?

Epoxy is fine if you have built the boat using that - otherwise you are better off with regular paint. Should the boat have a lot of epoxy fill you must be sure to abrade that well to form a good mechanical link - enamel paint don't stick real good to epoxy. An epoxy primer will prove a good base.
If the timber is well prepped get into it with a coat of primer or paint - but don't thin paint more than 5% at the very most - the extra thinner takes ages to get out of the paint, and over-thinned paint is pretty well useless due to the holidays left within your finish - or even the total failure of the finish to cross-link effectively. Whatever type of finish you choose, stick with the system and brand all through the job for a consistent result and back up by the manufacturer of the product.
The April 2009 edition of Wooden Boat magazine has an excellent article in it on this - in brief a number of coats rubbed back between and giving whatever time is needed between coats so they harden well and get rid of as much thinners and other volatiles before cutting back and re-coating. The more coats and cutting back the flatter and smoother the finish - and the better the result - I think six coats is a good minimum for paint on raw wood, and for varnish? I do at least ten coats for a bright finish and cut back and re-coat every six months if in the weather. I use lots of Penetrol from the Flood Co. - A hand full of coats wiped on and sanded flush before varnishing, and plenty in the varnish makes a good glass effect. Penetrol mixed with oil based stains allows very controlled application and even results, too.
Bottom line - your prep will be 75 % of the finished job - but lack of prep is 100% the reason for failure of any finish. The object of the exercise is to keep the water out of your wood, both inside and out - and while often the fancy two pack etc. stuff is very good, it is very dangerous to use without training and industry standard protective equipment. For the unskilled enamels and epoxies are quite dangerous enough - and they are not benign for your health either!!
