What Knot would best hold up the sail for a sunfish?
I just got a sunfish boat and the first time I was rigging it up, I untied the knot that is tied to the sail. I need to either know the exact knot that is used on the sail or the best knot available for the situation, the knot must not be able to slide along the sail mast (I dont know the correct name of the metal tubing that is on the outside of the sale). Sorry I cannot be much clearer but this is all I know.
according to the sunfish rigging guide, the tack grommet (lower corner where the two booms meet) is attached with an "s" hook. the two outer corners are attached with a "figure eight" knot.

"Attaching the sail to the booms
Spread out the sail, making sure there are no sharp objects nearby
that could damage it. Open the booms and lay them along the two
edges of the sail that have grommets. The Sunfish logo should face
the upper boom, which is the one with no blocks attached. Locate
the S hook from the line bag and hook it into the tack grommet (the
larger hole in the corner of the sail closest to the class association
patch). Hook the other end into one of the eyebolts holding the
booms together and crimp the S-hook closed with pliers.
Lace one of the outhaul lines through the grommet in the sail close
to the outboard end of the top boom, and then feed each end
through the hole in the boom end cap. Tie a figure eight in each end.
Repeat this step for the lower boom with the other outhaul line. The
outhauls should be fairly tight. Attach the sail to the booms with the
sail rings, just as you would hang a shower curtain".
a clove hitch is used to tie the main haylard to the upper boom to hoist the sail.

thanks, will, I liked your site. I can see the new tugs in your photographs too, and in the work boats for sale ads. I didn't mean to imply the port was dying; I like to see older boats outfitted and repurposed. My Havana joke was misleading because there is new investment in the tugs and maritime industries. The City viewed from the water is a continuous, vital commercial endeavor on shore and off, populated by people with tough jobs and their own logics and lore. Exciting.
