Costs of owning a yacht?
I'm just curious about the costs of owning a big boat. Like if I were to live on one. Sounds crazy I know, but what would the costs be of living on a powered yacht over a sailboat? I would rather be on the ocean, so would there be more cost cause of the salt water. I would like to be able to travel places like go to Europe or something crazy, is there a minimum size I should get? Is there a someway I could get a motorcycle on one? Any other things you could think of that would be helpful would be great? This is only out of curiousity, I'm way too poor to do it now. Someday.
Anything capable of blue water travel is going to have to be up to a certain high standard. You don't need $500,000.00 and water makers and air conditioners etc. etc. - you don't even need a fifth of that, but a lot of the costs are to do with the safety gear, the upkeep of the hull and rig to a very high standard and your skills base and requirements (desire!) of speed and luxury.
Costs are reasonable as long as you keep on top of it - a lot of that is self discipline, and the choice of a vessel within your means. It is true that money is very useful with any level of boating - but if you stop dreaming of the unobtainable and become brutally honest about what you NEED - not what you WANT - you can be on the water is a very safe blue water cruiser for a lot less than you think.

That link is to a 21' international cruiser built for the southern ocean - think Dangerous Catch type water with no shelter at all, infinite fetch and wind in the roaring forties and the furious fifties.
I have friends that sail the world on $20,000 boats and an annual budget of less than half that. They are incredibly self reliant and resourceful. I myself have accepted two tows in the last 40 years - one of them was my sailing dinghy last year, the other was my commercial vessel in 2003. I would rather drink my own vomit before accepting help unless there is absolutely no alternative.
One of them has no engine fitted at all. But he lives on mung beans, fish and water - really fit too.
It is a complete lifestyle choice, and it is not for everyone at all. Go out on some boats, pick the owner's brains, get some experience, and then get more. If it is for you you will know in the first real storm at sea!
