How would I go about putting a mast and sail on any boat?
Hi, I eventualy want to get a sailboat, I know how to sail (only the fundamentals, but next summer I'll be going to a sailing course to learn more advanced tehniques liek spinnaker, and keeling, etc.) and I have been wondering if I could get any boat, and just put a mast, sails, shrouds, etc. etc. on it? Is it possible? If it is, how would I do this? Any specifications of the boat I need to look at?
I basicly want a run down of how I can turn any boat into a sailboat.
no you can't just put a mast and a sail on a boat and expect it to be able to sail. sailboats are designed to take the power of the wind and transfer it to movement of the boat. this involves many factors that create a controlled balance of forces. in simple terms, the boat needs underwater foils in the form of a keel, dagger board, lee boards or centerboard and a rudder to created resistance and lift. the location and size shape and weight of the "keel" is also very important as a balance need to be created. this effects how a sailboat turns etc. mast height, placement, size and shape of the sails etc, is also part of this balance.
instead of trying to modify any boat, when you are ready to buy a boat, look a available sailboats for sale.
