how much power or how big does a yacht have to be to get from texas, USA to get to the caribbean?
me and my dad's girlfriend are going to buy an island so we need to know how big or powerful does a yacht have to be to make it there?

WOW... Now that is a dream. Not only is it red sails in the sunset... But living on a private island in the Caribbean... and with your Dad's girlfriend no less. Does your Dad know about these plans, or do you just expect to surprise him?
Obviously, the adult in me is extremely curious about just how you got the notion in your head that you and your Dad's girlfriend are going to buy an island in the Caribbean...
Oh well... I used to fantasize about running away with my baby sitter.
At any rate Caleb... The "Caribbean" is not just a place you go to... least not like going to Galveston from Dallas... The Caribbean encompasses more the one million sq. miles. So, just like a forest full of trees - you can go into the Caribbean for 1,000 miles, and still have 1,000 miles to go in any direction before you get back out again.
Inside that million sq. miles, there are over 7,000 islands, of which only 2% are inhabited. The reason they are not inhabited is because they have no fresh water to drink... That's a good thing to remember when shopping to buy an island.
Now to answer your question... It is not a question of "how much power or how big" your yacht needs to be. It is a question of what kind of "yacht" fits within your lifestyle, philosophy, and pocketbook. Clearly the vessel of choice for cruising the Caribbean is a sailboat. The main reason for this is that "like fresh water - there just aren't that many gas stations". While you can sail all around the Caribbean's perimeter island hopping your way, in such a way you seldom need to spend a night sailing on the open sea... fuel stops are very far and few between.
So, if you don't feel the need to impress your Dad's girlfriend by learning to sail... then the bottom line on a power "yacht" is one that will carry enough fuel to afford you with a 2,400 mile range between fill-ups. So when you go shopping, your first question to the salesperson needs to be "Does this yacht have a 2,400 nm range?" If it doesn't, don't even bother having a look onboard. Once you identify those that do... simply pick the one you like best and make sure you have a medium capacity fresh-water maker installed, because (believe me) they don't make boats big enough to carry both enough fuel and water for you to go cruising around in the Caribbean. A fresh water maker is a "must have".
From Galveston, Texas it is just short of 1,000 nm to the Cayman Islands. It is just over 1,000 nm to Nassau. It is 2,300 nm from Galveston to Trinidad and Tobago. So... depending on exactly where this island is... well, your mileage may vary.
FYI - I just happen to know of a Caribbean island for sale. It is called Polly Cay, it is 8 acres and is situated just off the southern tip of Little Exuma, only about a 15 minute’s boat ride from Great Exuma which has a medical clinic, a golf course an airport, and the biggest roaches on the planet. But Polly Cay can be yours for a mere $4,000,000.

My DH looks at sailboats for sale on CL every.single.day. We already have one, but he thinks we need a bigger one to live on permanently. YIKES!
I helped my son sell a large Technic Lego set, new in box, on CL. We met the guy at the public library, in the middle with other people around us.
We try selling things on the neighborhood trading post first, which is usually great since there are 500 homes in our hood.
PS. Kellie, couches never sell! Don't know why. I also tried giving a nice sofa and loveset to a couple who had no furniture and the guy said the couch wasn't long enough to lie down!
