On a calm, bright day, you're scuba diving in a deep lake (n = 1.34), 5.40 m from your sailboat.
A) When you are 2.50 m below the surface, the top of the sailboat mast appears to you to be in a direction 39.0° from vertical. Calculate the height of the mast.
B) From your point of view, the entire sky appears to be confined to a bright disk directly above you on the surface of the water. Determine the diameter of this circle.
A) Draw a diagram and you will see that the angle θ (which is the angle on the surface between the 5.4m distance to the boat and the line form the water to the top of the mast.
So the refracted angle as measured from the normal θb= 90 - θ...So θ = 90-θb
From Snell's Law we have n_a*sin(θa) = n_b*sin(θb) where n_a = 1.34 and n_b = 1.0
and θa =39o..
So θb = arcsin(1.34*sin(39)) = 57.5o...therefore θ = 90- 57.5 = 32.5o
Therefore the height of the mast = 5.40m*tan(32.5) = 3.44m
B) The disk will be the diameter as seen from 2.50m below when the light strikes the surface at the critical angle.
So n_a*sin(θ crit) = 1.0*sin(90) = 1....Therefore θ crit = arcsin(1/1.34) = 48.3o
So the radius of the circle will be 2.5m*tan(48.3) = 2.80m
So the diameter will be 2.80m*2 = 5.60m
