Which Hartley sailboat is best for a first time home builder who wants to spend some extended trips on it?
I want to build a Hartley sailboat, one that has a cabin large and comfortable enough for myself and one or two friends to sleep in for multiple nights. I could just buy a boat, but I want to be on something I made with my own hands. Any ideas one which Hartley is best?
The trip would be, hopefully, a week to a couple of months, though stops would be made. Some trips of course would be only a couple of days, but at least one would be a 2-3 month excursion.
I think we need to know a bit more: Does multiple nights mean a weekend on your boat at the slip on your local lake or sailing to the Bahamas? I'd choose a different one for each of these.
As your boat choice gets larger, your building time and cost will escalate dramatically and also if you wish to trailer the boat, you need to consider trailerability and trailer cost.
If I wanted a boat to put in a slip on a lake for the season, but be able to keep on a trailer for the winter, the 24, would probably be my choice . It would work reasonably well for a long weekend on the boat with a friend, but you will probably feel a little cramped and like your are camping out more than yachting. There's nothing wrong with that. (you could use their 21 this way as well. I've done a couple short multi-day trips on a Catalina 22) If you want something easy to trailer, that you could spend a couple nights on in protected ares, such as inland lakes, go with the 18. A boat that size is easy to rig and trailer.
If you desire a bit more comfort, I'd probably go up to 26 feet. I've spent up to 2 months on 26-footers.
