How does a 1988 28ft Bayliner 2850 Command Bridge handles out in the ocean?
I've heard Bayliner built good solid fiberglass hull in the early days like other boat manufacturers. I'm considering to purchase a 1988 28 foot 2850 Command bridge OR, a pre-blister year 28 foot Uniflite.

My question is this: Can this boat's hull handle rough water in the Bay Area and more importantly, is it capable of rough water in the ocean? Or should I consider a Uniflite instead? I know for a fact that the Uniflite's hull are ocean capable and can withstand rough water, but bayliner's amenities are way nicer? I will be using the boat for fishing. Thanks!
Have the boat inspected by a good boat shop. This is a 23 year old hull and Bayliner isn't a good ocean hull. It has a flatter dead rise so the ride will be harsh. This will be a better Delta boat than one going outside of the Gate. I run in/out of the Gate all the time with my Sea Ray for fishing. A steeper dead rise cuts the waves better and delivers a smoother ride. I know this style of boat so I'd advise against it. You can do much better these days and find something a lot newer.
If you move forward with any used boat, get a solid inspection of the hull and drive system. Then once it passes that, take it out for a test drive for at least 30 minutes. Again, I advise against the Bayliner, but that's up to you. Then to have such a large thirsty engine it's going to cost you a bundle to run it. The newer engines and drives use much less fuel and are better to have for bay/ocean use.

In rough water you probably wont be able to cowboy back into the boat, despite this video on my blog. the paddle float is a tool like anything else, and part of the fall back system that I teach. I will say that even in rough conditions it is pretty easy to do, particularly for those without great balance. Yes it is slower than the rodeo – or cowboy – and certainly slower than an assisted rescue or a roll. But really the key is not to end up in the water, and a simple brace stroke is a good start. That said, I practice all of these often, so if I need them they are there, and I wont put a kayak in the water without a paddle float and a bilge pump.

BTW…shoulda put up your dingy or at least threw a VERY long painter on it..Good experience for this fella.. hope he learned a little bit to go back out again…nothing serious abou it.. just a good sail…try sailing thru the cook straight instead…much more fun waiting in the outer Queen Charlotte Sounds for good weather.
I can't answer to what happens in Navy training, but I do remember from Army and USAF basic that push ups are not punishment. They are tools to reinforce behavior. That little princess is going to love the military.
hee hee. Okay I'm not in the navy, but i am in NJROTC which is a class in high school where they teach you all about this type of stuff. Now i watch the Marine's and the navy recruits train and graduate down in San Diego so i know what goes on. Your girl is gonna get her butt handed to her on a plate if she thinks she gonna have a walk in the park. They don't screw around this is serious crap they're doing. Yeah they'll teach her how to swim, and they won't kick her out but she better get ready to do some serious pushin! They still have that rule cause that's how they know you wont make that same idiotic mistake again.
I wish her luck but be prepare for her to leave about two weeks in to the training.
Human beings can’t stand disorder for an extended length of time. In other words even if we’re going into a crisis that crisis will be resolved in a matter of years, 5 years, 10 at the outside. Which means you’ll have to learn how to paddle in rough water, but not like forever.
