I removed a drain plug and a hose to drain the water out of my boat engine cause its getin close to freezing?

as i looked into the hose,,, it was all brown and gunky,, I can only imagine what the inside of the engine looks like.. is there anyway to flush my engine?,,, its a 84 Reinell inboard/outboard OMC... any suggestions
NO,, I did NOT drain the gear oil.
I got the water out, but there is gunk building up in the engine and hoses,,, is there a way to "flush" it?

unless you have a closed-cooling system, everytime you run the engine it flushes itself out! if it's raw water cooled, like most engines, hook up the "ear muffs" and garden hose to the water intake on the lower unit and run the engine for 10 minutes or so. This is really the only flush you can do. Make sure when you drain the engine block, you take a wire like a coat hanger or small screwdriver and bore out those little drain holes. They always get clogged up with sediment/rust and don't drain all the way unless you do this. Usually, water will gush out instead of trickle.

If you have a closed-cooling system, that uses antifreeze like a car, then you can do a flush just like a car. But I doubt you have this system.

1973 Reinell Merc 165

question about a 165 hp merc inboard?

i bought a 1974 reinell boat last september and i ran it once before storing it in my garage for the winter. It's my first boat i have owned. I drained the oil from the lower unit like i was suppose to. I pulled it out this weekend to do some work on it and noticed a small trickle of water dripping down on the right upper side of the engine just under the carberator. Now my question is could this be a possible crack in the motor from sitting in my garage during the winter? Like i said i never owned a boat before so had no knowledge if i was suppose to put antifreeze in this motor as i have yet to find a spot on the motor to where you would even put antifreeze in or water. Not sure how these inboard motors are set up as far as water running thru the motor. Any information on how to take care of these motors for winter would be helpfull. Thanks!

The engine should have a fresh water cooling system with a heat exchanger (see first source link). The heat exchanger should be drained on the fresh water side and / or flushed with propylene glycol antifreeze.

By not doing this in the fall, the heat exchanger or the raw water pump could have been cracked. The other side of the heat exchanger should contain glycol antifreeze which flows through the cooling jackets on the engine. This should be checked to make sure the glycol strength is enough to prevent freezing.

It's probably a good idea to bring the boat to a marine mechanic to have it checked out. While there ask them to run through the winterizing steps that should be done and answer your questions. It's probably a good investment that will save you money over the long haul.
