is seattle worth visiting?

we live in san francisco and are planning a trip up to seattle and then taking the train from seattle to vancouver. is seattle worth the money and time? i know you guys have the space needle and coffee, but what else are great must-sees for tourists?

Here are some possibilities depending on how much time you want to spend in our fair city:

1. Pike Place Market - one of the oldest continuously operating public markets in the US. Pick up some salmon (fresh or smoked) to take home with you, lots of local crafts vendors and local foods available.

2. Take a Ferry Ride - just like getting out on the water in SF Bay gives you a different perspective of the city, getting out on the water in Seattle is a treat. Unlike SF Bay, we have public ferries that will give you a round trip ride for about $7 each. Or you could plan an Argossy Cruise through the Ballard Locks and into Lake Union, and take a peek at our Houseboat community.

3. EMP - if you have any interest in Music, check out the Experience Music Project at Seattle Center.

4. Seattle Underground Tour - Learn about Seattle's early history with a walk through the "underground" area of Pioneer Square. A visit to the Gold Rush National Park/Museum is interesting too. Just like SF played a big part in the California Gold Rush, Seattle played a big part in the Klondike Gold Rush.

5. Mt. Rainier - a drive (or tour) to Mt. Rainier national Park is worth your time. Especially if you come in August and can get to Paradise when the meadows are in bloom with wildflowers, the view is spectacular.

6. San Juans/Whale watching. Take the time to get up into the San Juans and see our resident Orca population.

7. If you have an interest in Architecture, going to the top of Smith Tower (pioneer Square/Downtown area) and wandering through our new Library (designed by Rem Koolhaus) can be worth your time.

8. The Museum of Flight is south of Downtown and is a good destination for any aviation buffs - you can walk through a retired Concorde and an old Air Force One, plus see lots of other airplanes. True avaiation buffs could also go north to Everett and take a tour of the Boeing Factory.

Beyond all of that you still have the summer festivals, the Art Museum and outdoor sculpture garden, the UW campus, canoeing in the Arboreatum, the Japanese garden, floatplane rides over the city, the zoo, aquarium, Pacific Science Center, walking tours of the International District or of Pike Place Market, tours of the Theo Chocolate Factory, having a coffee at the first Starbucks. You get the idea. There's lots to do here. It all depends on how much you want to do!
