I used this book as one of several resources in preparing a webinar on communications for sailors. Marti's career in nursing and translating medical terms into laymen language for her patients makes for a very easy to digest book. As a licensed Captain on her own sailboat, she speaks from experience. Although somewhat dated with a 2013 copyright, her book is still an excellent resource for material not included in the SSB Radio's instruction manual.

I was disappointed that the book was not complete, the author kept talking about the inclosed handy guide, but there was none. Next time I'll buy new!

This is a classic book that belongs on the boater’s shelf especially if you have an HF radio and are planning on heading off-shore. While satellite communications are available, they cost! This book will help you make friends with your radio and other people out there.

The USCG no longer supports the lowest emergency frequency 2048 MHz. I live on a boat in San Diego and if my iCOM 700 marine SSB wasn't programmed for ham frequencies I would never hear anything. This isn't the authors fault. It just the airwaves are pretty silent.

Perfect! I owned an earlier edition of this but it got wet on the boat. I liked it then and this edition is great.

A reasonably good primer in SSB for yachets. There a few mistakes an in accuracies but over all a good basics primer.

Easy reading. Explains how MF/HF SSB radios work and what one needs to make this potentially lifesaving equipment work. Offers many insights and experiences of the author.
