Sailing down the Mississippi River?
I would like to sail down the Mississippi River next year with my brother, but I have a few questions about it! you don't need to answer all of them, but if you know any answers please share!
First of all, starting in Pittsburgh and going into the Mississippi, how long do you think that would take?
We want to get a pontoon, but is there any kind in particular we should get? Like a houseboat? Or just a regular pontoon?
I know that there are many locks and dams, so will we not be able to completely travel down the river? for example, will we have to take out the boat and then put it back in the river further down?That is what we are most worried about.
I hope these questions made sense. I'm not good at explaining these questions online!

I can't answer your questions, but wanted to say the first guy was super rude. First off, I used to live in Cincinnati and boats of all types from kayaks/canoes up to larger pleasure craft go through the locks. I live in Minneapolis now and see kayaks in the locks all the time and there have been articles of several guys kayaking/canoeing all the way to New Orleans. You would never have to portage.
However, to really enjoy yourself, I wouldn't get a pontoon boat, anywhere near big cities and major barge traffic it wouldn't be able to handle it. Get a larger pleasure craft.
The previous responder does have a good recommenation that you should have a radio -- it isn't required by it would be a good idea. Would also be a good idea to contact the local coast guard and take a certification coarse on traveling big water. I'm sure through that course or contacts there you can find information on navigation and such.
Count on the trip taking a very long time. The Ohio River twists and turns many times and you'll also want to take time to enjoy the scenery; I bet it would take a good week just to get to Cincinnati unless you were just focused on making time.
