Building pontoon boat?
I am building a pontoon boat out of mild steel, i'll be building literally everything for it except maybe the toons because they would take longest - i have calculations for bouyancy and all that good stuff all i need to know is what is the rule on weight limit and amount of people for the size, Im making it 19 foot by 8 foot. I live in North dakota but will be using it mainly in Minnesota, any idea on how high the toons have to sit out of the water at full payload, etc. Anything you know on these regulations would help. I have all the information I need for life vests, fire ex. and all that just I need the design regulations, such as whether or not rails are REQUIRED and all of above. Thanks.

Did I really burn this much fuel??
Me and my girlfriend went to Ft Myers Fl. for a 3 day vacation. On one of the days we rented a boat to go cruising around the water for the day. The place wanted 200 dollars for a full day or 150 for a half day plus you pay for the fuel you burn. We are on a tight budget so I got the guy to give us a full day at the price of a half days rate. The tank is full when you leave and they fill it up when you get back and you pay for that. The boat was a 17 foot pontoon boat with a yamaha 70hp motor. We were in the boat from 11am to about 4:30pm. About 5 1/2 hours. In that time we stopped twice for about 20 minutes and 45 minutes. So id say the engine was on for about 4 total hours. In that time we were full throttle about 75% of the time. Had a few no wake zones to go through. We get back and he says we burned 29 gallons of fuel!! At 5 bucks a gallon! You do the math.. Not expecting this at the least!! Did we get ripped off? Was the tank not full when we left? I didnt check..
The general rule of thumb for fuel usage for a 70hp motor is about 7 gallons per hour. A pontoon also doesn't really plane out and both displaces a lot of water and has a lot of drag.
I have A 50 HP on a 16' aluminum V hull and it uses about 5 gallons per hour. Meaning that an hour long run will cost me about $125 at $5/gal. Full or part throttle makes little difference as that going slower just means more running time. My best economy comes when running at max recommended rpm with as much of the hull as possible out of the water.
That's not usually possible with a pontoon boat.
If I were to have forecast fuel usage for your amount of time out, I'd have said about 38 gallons give or take one gallon.
Fuel tjis morning here at the dock was $5.17, for which a fill up would cost you closer to $200.
This is the main reason I've downsized to the 50 hp motor from my 70 hp on my small boat and dry docked my bigger boat.
