Which is the best Kayak?
I am in the process of losing 100 pounds. As a reward at 50 pounds lost I am going to buy a fishing Kayak. I'll still be a big guy at -50 lbs so I am sold on the Wilderness System Kayaks. Only question is the Ride 135 or Tarpon better. They are about the same price (expensive) but I only want to make this purchase once. Which is better and what's the difference between the two?
You don't say which Tarpon but I assume you mean the 120 since it is closest to the Ride 135 in price.
Ride 135: 13' 4" long, 32" beam, 400 lb. capacity and weighs 61 lbs.
Tarpon 120: 12' 3" long, 30" beam, 350 lb. capacity and weighs 73 lbs.
Seems like the Tarpon must have more accessories or possibly heavier hull since it is shorter and narrower yet weighs more. The Ride is described as a "double pontoon" so it must be extremely stable, however that will make it a b!tch to paddle any distance and it will windc*ck like a rubber raft. If you mostly intend to sit not far offshore in a lake or calm river that won't matter. If you plan to paddle any distance, the Tarpon might be slightly better. However, a better tracking and handling boat would be the slightly more expensive Tarpon 160. At 16' and 28" beam, 375 lb. load rating it would be faster and easier to paddle than either of the other boats, even though it's 81 lbs with the rudder option. That's a boat you could use for day touring as well as a for a fishing platform (which is mainly what the other two are). Better bang for the buck in my book.
But you're the one using it so you'd be the best judge of what you need. Kind of like asking other people which car model you should buy
