Places for teens to go in Seattle?
My friend is coming over to Seattle from Florida next summer. I haven't seen her in 5 years and I really want to make the occasion special.
I was wondering if any of you know of any cool things to do in Seattle or of a website where I can see things that are directed more towards teenagers. All the websites I've seen point at the obvious like the Space Needle and non-special things like museums, art galleries, and tours. (I still plan on taking her on some of those, by the way.)
Our tastes are very much alike in that we are both film buffs, like all kinds of music (from Sinatra to the Beatles to the Cranberries), and we are both always looking for a thrill (skydiving, maybe?). We've already thought of going to the Seattle Ghost Tours and the Fremont Outdoor Cinema but we need more things to take up her month long visit. But please don't let any of that limit your suggestions. Thanks.
Several troupes offer outdoor "Shakespeare in the Park" performances at various parks in the Seattle area through the summer. They are lots of fun to watch.
If you have an adult you are willing to let go with you, you can rent canoes at the UW waterfront activity center (behind husky stadium), or rowboats at the Center for Wooden boats. They have free sails on their sailboats and/or classic wooden powerboats on Sundays at the CWB too.
Keep an eye out on what the Experience Music Project is doing next summer. In addition to visiting the museum, they also have concerts in their "Sky Church" and occasionally offer teen events there also.
In the spring, check who is coming to play at Zoo Tunes - outdoor concerts at the Zoo. They are all ages concerts and they usually have a variety of performers over the summer. Tickets can sell out quickly, but I've often seen people selling their tickets at the door the day of the concert.
You can rent roller blades and skate around Greenlake. (you might need an adult to do the renting for you).
For most of June and July there are neighborhood festivals leading up to Seafair in early August. My favorite activity is the milk carton derby at Greenlake in early July. If your friend is going to be here for that, you might consider collecting milk cartons and building your own boat to show and race!
Where to look for ideas? The Seattle times has an activity page for the coming weekend each week - on Thursdays I think. The Stranger has concert listings, but you'll need to presume that everything listed is adult only unless they say it's all ages. And it may be geared towards kids, but check out the "Seattle Child" free magazine you'll find at coffee shops and other places parents congregate. Some of the listings there will be too young for you, but at least a few are all ages.
