I have some questions about the torpedoing of ships in the early 1900s.?
No photos, no links please. Just words.
Why did Germany insist on torpedoing British ships back in the day. i.e: Britannic, Lusitania. Beside them being of two different lines, how are they similar?
Why did ships that were done this way flip on their sides after sinking (which is the creepiest thing on earth, mind you)
Was Germany ever prosecuted for killing so many people this way?
Short answers:
1. It was war... Germany was at war with Britain.
2. Only few did... (pre-Titantic) ships buit after that, as was the Brittanic - mostly go down by the bow or stern.
3. No, not directly... as the Captain of the submarine died before the war ended... but then after the war, there were the Nuemburg Trials.
Longer answer:
"POSH" Ever hear that? We use that word today to describe something "very elegant or classy". But, its origin is maritime.
And "Posh" is why the Britannic flipped on its side... (not all ships do this, and in fact, most don't). "POSH" is the acronmym for "Port - Out, Starboard - Home,) ... In the early 1900's when passenger ships began crossing the Atlantic... Passengers of "Class" had the money to pay extra for window cabins... and if you were really "posh" you could choose which side of the ship you wanted your window cabin to be on. And "POSH" was the way to go... it meant "Port - Out" = morning shade with an incoming sea breeze - so your cabin remained cool (no air-conditioning back then) and in the evening (lunch to dinner) most everyone spent that time in the Dinning halls, or Grand Salon, or on Deck where ever there was shade... (people didn't "tan" back then).
And "Starboard - Home" so on the return trip - they would choose a "Starboard" cabin... and the same would be true.
But... The Britannic actually hit a mine... she was a bit off course due to weather and fog... and actually, know one knows (or is telling) exactly whose mine it was she hit; as it was in the Mediterranean, and could have been just about anyones... though some thought it was torpedoed - it wasn't until 1995 divers concluded Britannic hit a mine, as they discovered the mines anchor at the wreckage (dive site). However, she probably would have made it to the Island of Kev (Greece) had not the Doctors, Nurses, and Staff, left all the Portholes open on the Port side...
Britannic's design (built after lessons learned from the Titantic) had double walled bulkheaded water-tight compartments running port to starboard, as well and bow to stern... and from bottom up to first cabin floor level... which would have allowed her to remain afloat (due to water tight seals on all floor levels) with her hull flooded to first level of passenger cabins... but the explosion caused her to develope a 15 degree list... and she would have remained afloat except all those Portholes were open... So as she took on more water through her portholes which ran the full length of the ship, she continued to turn on her side... So much so, that only 4 lifeboats on her Port side were launched... because the davits (used to lower the lifeboats) swung the lifeboats out so far from the ship... no one could reach them... and on the Starboard side, the opposite was true... the lifeboats were being lowered onto the lower decks...
As far as the Lusitania is concerned, it was torpedoed by the German submarine U-20, The submarine's Captain Schwieger was condemned in the Allied press as a war criminal, but he did not survive the war... He would have undoubtedly been placed on trial as a war criminal at the Allies' insistence. Nazi War war criminals were tried. Some (over 70) were executed, and many more served life in prison.
Most of the really top officers were tried and sentenced at the Nuremburg trials...
Of the 139 Americans aboard, 128 lost their lives. There was massive outrage in Britain and America. The British felt the Americans had to declare war on Germany. U.S. Secretary of State William Jennings Bryan, fearing the US would declare war, resigned from the Cabinet in protest; however, President Woodrow Wilson still did not want the country to get involved in a European dispute because the American population (many of whom were German-American) did not want to be involved in a war nor were they ready -- no matter how outraged they were. Instead of declaring war, he sent a formal protest to Germany.
However, everyone was warned in advance...
The German embassy placed a warning advertisement in American newspapers, including those in New York, and ran it every day... up to the day of the Lusitania's departure.
The German Embassy in Washington had issued this warning on 22 April.[9]

intending to embark on this Atlantic voyage are reminded that a state of war exists between Germany and her allies and Great Britain and her allies; that the zone of war includes the waters adjacent to the British Isles; that, in accordance with formal notice given by the Imperial German Government, vessels flying the flag of Great Britain, or any of her allies, are liable to destruction in those waters and that travellers sailing in the war zone on the ships of Great Britain or her allies do so at their own risk.

This warning was printed right next to an advertisement for Lusitania's return voyage.
On February 4, 1915, Germany declared the seas around the British Isles a war zone. Effective as of February 18, Allied ships in the area would be sunk without warning. This was not wholly unrestricted submarine warfare, since efforts would be taken to avoid sinking neutral ships.[7]
When you get to be my age... history is fun... and no big deal... you don't have to look it up... you just have to remember... lol

Good boathandling, good boat. Maybe kind of silly to have a float-free life raft on the flood-able bow deck?
A stay is a standing (as opposed to running) rigging – a wire rope – supporting and stabilizing the mast with the hull of the boat. The staysail is attached to the forward stay which is attached at the bow (deck or bowsprit). The jib then is attached to the short stay.
