northcoast boats
Marine biology question?
1st. Okay im 15 and i wanna be a marine biologist,however i dont know exatly what they do so if you could be so kind and give me a little information ( ive always thought the abyssal regions were the most interesting)
2nd. Could somebody recommend a college (northwestern region preferred)
3rd. What classes should i take in high school
It depends on what type of marine biologist you want to be?
1. I work for Alaska Dept. of Fish and Game and am a shellfish biologist. I started out in school to be a Marine Mammal Biologist and somehow ended up with cold-blooded animals. Go figure...
When I was interning as a marine mammal biologist...we would go out on boat surveys everyday...typically 8 hours a day and do line transects (sampling is rigorously confined to organisms that are actually touching the line) and literally count the targeted dolphin species on our transects. We would record various data (weather, sea-state, behavior [feeding, traveling, playing], GPS coordinates, dorsal fin pictures). We would later enter in that data in various programs in the office and organize our dorsal fin pics according to the individuals.
Today, as a shellfish biologist...I spend most of my time indoors helping to manage the shellfish fishery. I enter in LOADS of data and make maps from GPS information. I go on aerial and boat surveys to collect data from various commercial shellfish species. I'd say that I spend 20% of my time out in the field and approx. 80% of my time at a desk. Most of my time is spent entering in data and writing papers.
2. I went to school at University of Washington in Seattle, Washington and graduated in Conservation/Environmental biology.
THE BEST school to go to for Marine Biology on the west coast is University of California San Diego. They work in conjunction with Scripps Institute for Oceanography (the 2nd best oceanography institute in the world).
University of Washington, Oregon State University and Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA are very good northwestern schools for marine biology!
Also, Humboldt State University (Arcata, California) is a small school of about 8000 students and has an excellent program. I would contact Dawn Goley (http://www.humboldt.edu/~biosci/faculty/goley.html) for more information about what it takes to become a marine biologist. She is an incredible person and would be more than happy to help out someone of your age and passion for your future in Marine Biology.
3. And finally...what classes should you take in high school? Chemistry, Calculus and advanced biology courses will take you far and will look great if you try to get into a competitive program (marine biology) at a University such as UCSD.
Also, my biggest advice to you is...VOLUNTEER VOLUNTEER VOLUNTEER for ANYTHING you can get your hands on for marine biology. Beach walks, beach guides, marine mammal rescue centers (example: Northcoast Marine Mammal Center: http://www.northcoastmmc.org), and oil spill clean-ups. Try to do summer marine biology camps or internships. This will look AMAZING when applying for college!
