August in Dublin for 3 days?
Hey! The (now) fiancee and I are off to Dublin/London for a few days late August. We have about 3 days slotted out for ireland, and plan on staying in Dublin. Any suggestions? We'd like to get out and see the country a bit, in addition to hitting up pubs, a club or two, and castles and such. Any "must-sees" would be greatly appreciated!
Well, in Dublin itself there's enough to keep you occupied for the three days. Dublin is a walkable city, most of the attractions are within 15-20 mins walk of each other. There's-
Temple bar - Dublin city centre. Main tourist area, full of bars.
Dublinia medieval Dublin exhibition - Synod hall, Winetavern st. (adjacent to Christchurch cathedral).
The viking splash tour, (amphibious tour of the city).
National Museum - (Kildare st. and Collins Barracks sites),
The National Gallery - Merrion Square.
Trinity college & the book of Kells.
Phoenix park - (contains the zoo, ashtown castle and the wellington memorial).
The GPO - site of the proclamation of independence during the 1916 rising, O'Connell st.
I recommend taking the ghost bus tour. (book tickets from the Dublin bus office on O'connell st.)
Dublin castle - most of the medieval structure is now hidden in the fabric of later buildings, however a couple of towers (the record tower and Bermingham tower) are still visible. Was the seat of English control during the colonial period. (Also contains the Chester Beatty libary.)- Just off dame st.
St. Michan's church, crypts contains the mummified remains of burials (caused by the limestone in the surrounding soils).
The Guinness Storehouse- Home of Irelands favourite export, Just off Thomas st.
Dublin Sea safari, customs house quay.- powerboat tour of Dublin bay.
The Writers museum, 18/19 parnell sq north- features exhibits on George bernard Shaw, Oscar Wilde, James Joyce, Johnathan swift, W.B. Yeats.
Outside of Dublin there's-
Trim castle, Trim, County Meath.- Medieval castle, (was used in the Wallace execution scene in"Braveheart").
Newgrange megalithic burial chamber, - Co. Meath. (bus tours run from Dublin)
Blarney castle, co. cork. home of the famous "Blarney stone".
