The Great Gatsby characters?
Well can anyone compare and contrast the characters of Tom and Gatsby from the book called "The great Gatsby"?
Jay Gatsby was born James Gatz to a poor farm couple in North Dakota. At 17, he changes his name to Jay Gatsby as he severs ties with his humble beginnings and dreams of a better day. His job with a millionaire yacht owner teaches him how to make money. While serving in the U.S. Army, he falls in love with Daisy Fay, but she marries the scion of a wealthy family after Gatsby goes overseas. When Gatsby returns he pursues his dream: to make a fortune that enables him to reclaim Daisy Fay (now Daisy Buchanan).
Tom Buchanan Daisy’s boorish and bigoted husband, who comes from a fabulously wealthy Chicago family. He is arrogant and condescending. At Yale, where he was an outstanding football end, many of his fellow students despised him.
Tom in spite of his wealthy and highly educated family background is very opinionated and orthodox in many ways. He has his fixed opinions about certain things. On the other hand he cheats on Daisy, for he has a mistress.
Gatsby is a person with a golden heart and he has wasted away his whole life in an expectation that Daisy will come back to him, but unfortunately he departs from this world without his wish having been granted.
There is no comparison between Gatsby and Tom, for one is grave, sincere and devoted and the other is moody, frivolous, and unfaithful.
