mcgregor sailboats
different types of sailboat keels for trailering?
I'm looking to buy a 26 to 27 ft sailboat that I can trailor. Does it have to be a swing keel also I heard there are swing keels that fill with water and leaded ones that crank up close to the bottom. If so what are some good ones
McGregor makes (or at least did make) water ballast sailboats, but the keels weren't water filled. You want either a swing keel or daggerboard design, and I'd respectfully suggest looking at 22 to 25's. Bigger than that, and they're not trailerable due to width. By trailerable, I mean they don't require "oversize load" signs and follow vehicles. The slightly smaller boats won't have a full kitchen, and they won't have a real marine head -- they'll have a chemical toilet with a curtain instead of a door. Shop around, look at several, hang around a yacht club on a Sunday, and ask people for a ride -- sailors are a freindly bunch, and will be generally helpful. Be sure to hook up and pull the boat you're considering, to be sure you'll be comfortable pulling it on the highway.
