two masted sailboats
How far would you have to sail to Stockholm from Amsterdam? how long?
i had a great idea for a story i'm writing in my english class, and it involves sailing from Amsterdam, the Netherlands, to Stockholm, Sweden. i want my information to be accurate, so i'm wondering how far are the two cities from each other, and if you used a sailboat to get there, how long would it take? if you can figure it out, that would be wonderful

You can work out distances by using a free internet map like Google maps.
The distance for a car is 1500 km, a little less than 1000 mile.
Which route you would take in a sailboat depends on the size of that boat, on the time your book is set, now there are lots of canals cutting through big pieces of land that are a bit in the way if you want to sail the seas, but if your book is set in the past, like the 15th century, non of those canals was there.
And it of course depends on the speed of the boat. A tea clipper is way faster than the big cargo sailors of the same days. A racing yacht is way faster than a family fun cruiser.
And for boats under motor power there is the same kind of difference.
Do not forget that a wind sailed boat is depending on the weather, so any boat under sail can have to wait out a storm or be slowed to a very slow speed if the wind is from the wrong direction, or not strong enough.
Friends of mine have sailed to Sweden, in a tiny and not fast yacht, just big enough to take it across the sea. They used sail power whenever the wind was useful, a diesel motor when needed.
They would use a canal to cut across Denmark or north Germany, not go around Denmark.
It still took them weeks. On motor they have an effective speed of 8 km an hour (this is taken from their overall distance and time for a like trip just on motor power.) Sailing can be a little faster but is often a little slower too.
A big three masted ship, with motor power for when sailing does not work was on TV last year, they would change locations each week and would do a distance like Amsterdam to Oslo in a week, with 3 days and nights on sea, as far as I understand. But it is likely that they are restricted to the coastal waters and can not cut across Denmark.
