How do you make a simple boat that floats?
HELP! Im making a boat for science class. It needs to hold at least 4000 g of weights and cannot be more than 12X12 inches. I made one, but it can only hold 2000 g. Please help I am turning it in tomorrow so I need to know asap. Thanks so much for your help!
You did not mention what materials you are allowed to use. If you can use plastic bottles, then take two (the bigger the better within your 12 x 12 limits) empty bottles tightly sealed to form a catamaran shape and use balsa wood as a platform.
It will look more like a raft, but if the bottles are big enough it will carry the weight. To float 4000 grams of cargo, the boat must displace 4000 grams of water (4000 ml or 4 liters) in addition to the displacement of the boat itself when it is empty. It must also be stable when the load is added to the vessel.
12" x 12" = 929 cm^2 so 1 cm of hull depth will displace 929 ml of water. So, your boat should be at least 4.3 cm deep. I would add a few more cm to account for the weight of the actual boat... assuming it is mostly Styrofoam, balsa and aluminum foil.
By the way, the aluminum foil boat suggested will not hold 4000 g. The lightest penny weighs 2.5 g, and that would require 1600 pennies to equal 4000 g. The YouTube video record was something like 480 pennies or 1200g. You might be able to increase the capacity of an aluminum foil boat by adding balsa wood and rigid pieces of Styrofoam... on the outside of the boat, if permitted. You can find flat Styrofoam at Home Depot or Lowe's in the insulation area. The boat on YouTube deformed, causing it to sink.
I just thought of another style boat. If you can find a large plastic pretzel container... the one I have is 12" tall. Screw the cap on tightly and cut an opening in one side for the top of the boat. Then, tape or glue something on the bottom of the boat for ballast (so it doesn't spin when the weights are added... adding the weight to the outside is better, acts like a keel, but inside should work too). Or, better yet, tape two empty one liter water bottles on either side like out-riggers to prevent it from spinning! No added weight for ballast and lots of extra buoyancy.
