Hair standing up in lightning storm, what does it mean?
One time, I was out on an inland lake in MN when a very severe storm showed up. I was on a power boat surrounded by about 85 sailboats. The weird part though, was when my friends long hair stood straight up in the air and the masts and rigging of some sailboats were "buzzing". There was lightning in the area but no one got struck. Is this normal or did we just miss getting struck by lighting?
From what you describe, you just missed getting struck. The static electricity was basically a result of an invisible streamer of charge reaching from your friends head into the sky. If a streamer reaching down from the storm had connected, lightning would have been the result. You all were very fortunate. That is why it is always advised to get off of lakes when storms come close.
