What is a good travel novel?
I love to read travel stories (preferably true, so I guess not novels but books) and I loved a few I've read in the past, a lot about women but I'm not so much into women empowerment through travel or anything...that gets old.
I heard about "Eat, Pray, Live" that's all over the charts right now, but are there any others? If you can, include a little description about the titles you give, especially the country(ies) of travel. I like funny, interesting books that are more telling of the culture than the author, but that's interesting too.
My interests are pretty broad - I tend to like Western Europe travels because that's my interest area for travelling, but anywhere will do. Islands are great. I also like Australia and anywhere with lots of ice or snow.
Also interesting was John Krakauer's "Into Thin Air" about climbing Everest.

I have a copy of The Dictionary of Imaginary Places: The Newly Updated and Expanded Classic by Alberto Manguel - which is really good. Amazon's description: "Like an ordinary geographical dictionary, The Dictionary of Imaginary Places contains alphabetically organized entries for more than a thousand locales.
