What is windsurfing like?
So I've been sailing lasers and 420's for a good lengthy time and I know a lot of theory and I've started racing with them. So I saw a video of a windsurfer doing all these flips, and I know you can't do that on a sailboat and I want to learn it, so I've got a couple of questions.
How much would a windsurfing board cost. Also what aspects of normal sailing are incorporated into it, and what aspects are new too it. Thank you.
Another thing is that I've started snowboarding so will that help at all
Windsurfing is a fantastic sport. It takes some time to learn though, especially if you are thinking about making jumps and such. That will not only take you a long time, you also need to live in the right place, with consistent strong winds and waves. Only a small percent of windsurfers get to that level. Most of us have a lot of fun sailing in flatter water and have to sail when the wind is good enough.
The most important thing if you want to get started is to start with the right equipment. Your first board needs to have a large volume, more than 200 liters, so it is floaty and stable. Two main options here, a modern wide board (i.e. Sarboart Start) or a longboard (i.e. an old Mistral Equipe or Pan Am) with daggerboard. This second option should be fairly cheap, $100 to $200 for the board and also will be the closest to sailing a sailboat. You can keep it for light wind sailing after you learn (normally the wide board you will not want anymore after a while). Initially you will have to work on the equilibrium. Having sailed with sailboats will help you some, mainly because you understand the wind, but many things are different in windsurf. There is no rudder so you turn moving the mast forward or backward in light winds. But the main difference with sailing is when you plane (winds 13 mph or higher), it is then when it is really fun and then you turn (jibe) by carving the board. You also use a harness, so you are hooked to the boom.
The advise would be somewhat different depending on where you live and the local conditions. The main thing: You need to be patient. Learning takes time and progress can be really slow. My suggestion is, find out where the windsurfs go in your area, and ask them for tips. That may be also the best option for getting cheap equipment .

Regarding your question about snowboard, it will help some, but not much as the way you make equilibrium is pretty different. But the fact that you are doing it tells a lot, you will definitely like windsurfing. It is cheaper and your falls will hurt much less!

Regarding the comments from kiteboard, the guy copied parts of my response and is clearly trying to lead you to that sport. The costs he indicates (for new windsurfing equipment) are absurd as you can get good used equipment for less than $500. Of course a dealer will try to steer you that way so he can make a sell, but if during the times of the windsurf boom people started and have fun with the now "old" and "superceeded" equipment... why not YOU? I started with $350 for all the equipment including 3 sails. Bic Samba board, aluminum mast and boom and 3 Infinity dacron sails. I had a blast and then when I learned I gradually replaced it. My option of the longboard is an improvement over what I did. I bought my Mistral Equipe for $100 AFTER I learned, and I wish it had been my fiorst board. That is the one I use to teach my friends and they can handle it very well. Unless you have space limitations or have money to expend, that is the best way to go. Recently a friend of mine bought a Mistral Pan Am for $85 in Kansas City. Check Craigs List.

The Newest Speed Secret For Laser Sailboats?
good sailboat for beach?
i like the laser but i'm afraid that it is too fragile. i want a boat that is fairly easy to sail but can still be a challenge and is very durable. it will be sailed on lake michigan and i am a beginer/intermediate sailor. i would like it to have a capacity of at least two people.
The Laser is a far from fragile boat.
They are sailed in regattas almost every day, they've been an Olympic class for quite some time as well.
I have one that is about 25 years old. Other than routine maintenance, there's nothing wrong with it for having fun on the water. Racing it may be a different story though.
Edit to add: Unless my 'fragile' you mean 'easy to tip over' The Laser is a fast, powerful boat (depending on the sail used; there are several different sizes) and unless you're heavy enough to balance it, it can go over easily in mid- to heavy winds.
If that is your worry, the same company makes another boat called the Bug that is smaller less powerful, and easier to handle. there are plenty of other small beach boats, like the Sunfish, various Hobie made boats, among others.

We had been sailing all day…laser sailboats. We had capsized and had to swim for the mast, insert it, and then try to head back to shore. It began to rain, thunder, and lightning! We were on a huge lake but still the wind whipped the waves into a frenzy and it took forever to get to dry land. Waiting for us, at camp, was hot coffee made on a grate above the fire. Cowboy coffee. Nothing ever tasted so good. I could do with something made from a fancy schmancy machine!
