larson boats
Can I put a chevy 350 or similar in place of my 72' 120hp Mercruiser inboard without giving up an arm & a leg?
the boat is a 1966 Larson 18' .. we're primarily trying to use it to go fishing on weekends and the motor we have on it now is trash.. its mixing water into the oil.. we just bought the boat and they told us the motor was great yet it mixed water into the oil... we spent over $700 on this crap motor did a headgasket job resurfaced the heads and changed out the water/exhaust manifold gaskets still nothing... any ideas of engines we can just bolt on that will be cheapest.. and any ways we can fix our problem... the motor runs at higher RPMs but doesnt idle... we tried cleaning the carb.. tried the timing.. but doesnt want to idle once again we dont know weather the engine was properly winterized or not.... thanks for all your help!!
Sounds like the engine wasnt properly winterized and you have a internal crack .Whats happening at idle is the water is getting into the cylinders and trying to hydrolock. When you rev it up you are clearing the cylinders out but once again at idle they try to fill back up.
If you were to swap it out for a V8 you will need a 1.50 gear ratio outdrive. ..
If you use an automotive engine you would have to change the camshaft and valve springs to marine as the engine runs in a differant rpm range than a automotive engine. Then you have to change the steel freeze plugs to brass. And then find marine starter,alternator and manifolds and risers.
Then the proper carburator as its jetted for marine application
So by the time you do all this you now have spent more than what the boats worth.
Just find another 120 motor . There are plenty of marine rebuilders out there who supply them. Try Jasper engines

Larson boat problems?
Whenever there's a lot of people/weight it runs really slow. But when there's just 3 to 4 it runs fine. It didn't run like this before. What can be the problem?
there's a few things you should do whenever you start to notice performance degradation in a boat.
Compression test the engine. A simple test that tells you the overall health of the engine and its ability to make power.
Spark test. A marine engine laboring under heavy load frequently can mean a cylinder or two dropping out. Spark test with an inline tester (not a *spark plug* test) tells you whether the ignition is capable of firing the plugs inside the cylinders when the going gets tough.
Inspect the hull, prop and lower unit, look for irregularities, marine growth, etc.
Test the overtemp warning system - overheating is more likely under a heavy load and robs the engine of power.
Check to see if the trim cylinders are leaking down.
Look for water in the fuel.
Look for water collecting somewhere in the hull. Sample the floatation foam to see if it's getting waterlogged.
Maybe the passengers are gaining weight?

Beyond that, more details are needed - hull design, engine type/year/horsepower. More detailed symptoms. How many RPMs is it making now/how many do you think it should be making.
