how big does a sailboat have to be in order to be able to live on it, being able to sail on sea aswell?

i would like to live on a sailboat and sail back and forth from florida and canada how big would that boat have to be

I lived aboard my Lancer 29 for some time. I was very comfortable I loved the fell of the boat rocking me to sleep every night. You can go smaller but for living you need a certain level of comfort. As for sailing in Blue Water size isn't the measure there. It's more construction. Are the chain plates heavy and anchored to the boat strongly? Are the shrouds and stays heavy enough to carry the extreme loads. The Pacific Seacraft Flicka at 20 feet meets this level of construction while the much larger Catalina 30 makes a safe coastal cruiser but is not built to the levels needed for open water. For your needs where you won't be doing to much Blue Water sailing maybe the more comfortable Catalina or the like would be a good choice.
