can anybody tell me about new zealand?

This is a great country to visit if you are intending to go there. (Or are you asking this because it is a school project?)

I'll tell you why it is my favourite country in all the world to visit. There is a saying that this is God's country. When you see it, you'll know why. It's absolutely beautiful.

All the greens, ochres, browns and blues mixing together to form the colourful landscape. In Maori, New Zealand is known as the Land of the Long White Cloud. So it is. Plenty of clouds and rain, in South Island especially, but plenty of blue skies too. Lots of mountains, and lots of waterfalls.

The European settlers who first came to NZ brought their own flora and fauna to make the place seem like Europe. So, you find that whatever they brought flourish in a way that they did not back home.

All over the countryside, in November , you will find miles and miles of lupins. The entire landscape will be filled with these brightly colourful blooms. (Google: Click on Images --> "New Zealand lupins")

The rabbits they brought so that they could go hunting are all over the place now and are pests in an agricultural country.

But so did the sheep proliferate which is why the country is known for its export of wool and woollen goods. There are more sheep in New Zealand than people.

If you are a tourist, you might love to see the Bay of Islands in the North Island where you can go in a boat into a cave on one of the islands. Or go to Rotuara to see the hot springs and the Pohutu Geyser. Or the glowworm caves with all the glowworms hanging from the dark ceiling like stars against a night sky.

This cave was huge, and the guide told us that it was like an underground cathedral. In fact, the acoustics were perfect for a choir. "Want to test it out?" And a lady in the crowd began to sing, "Praise God from whom all blessings flow. Praise him, all creatures here below ... " It was a beautiful and fitting choice, as we creatures -- us and the glow-worms -- in that underground cave were giving praise to our God.

In the South Island, you have Queenstown, a picturesque little ex-mining town. Before arriving you can try bungee-jumping at A J Hackett's, and get a certificate to say you did it. In Queenstown, there are shops and a chairlift to the hills above it to take in the view. A very pretty place.

Further on, you can take a jetboat ride with a Shotover Jet. This is a boat that can go very fast by being light and high-powered. There is a point where your picture is taken so you go home with a souvenir of your adventure.

Around there is the pretty village of Te Anau and all around would be the location of Lord of the Rings. You could then take a journey down Milford Sound, riding a boat on a river that is 400 metres wide and 260 m deep. We saw seals, and dolphins and waterfalls on either side. At the mouth the boat turns back.

On the way back to civilisation, we were in Homer Pass eyeing a long series of waterfalls, and stopped for a rest, when two huge green-brown parrots, called keas, came to nibble at the rubber linings on our bus. We saw many other interesting birds, like the purple gallinule. But no kiwis. They were night birds.

NZ has many ranges of snow-capped mountains, adding to the beauty of the landscape. We went to see the snowfield on Mount Cook, by helicopter, and landed on a glacier. It was a dangerous place, as one false slip could land us in a big drop called a crevasse.

As we moved from place to place, I asked them where to find the fabulously delicious clam called the toheroa. This is a protected species. We were told Invercargill down south and Bay of Islands, way up north. Park rangers watch as you dig for them to see that you don't take too many, and that they are large ones. You have to throw small ones back to give them a chance to grow bigger and to breed. See them at

Everything is big in New Zealand, I thought, as I watched the Huka waterfalls pouring out water equivalent to five huge swimming pools per second.

Among my most memorable moments were seeing frost on the ground, sitting on the icy bedroom floor in the dead of night and looking out the window at the outlines of sheep slowly grazing on the starlit hills, both glowing in the light of brilliant stars, cold as the night air, in the middle of winter.

There is something about the place that washes your soul clean. Truly this is the place where God lives. Which is how our local newspapers back home described it. I read that before I came here the first time.

I've been to NZ three times. Each time was as great an experience as the first. If you haven't been to NZ, save it for the day you marry as your honeymoon destination. If you are married, go there for your second honeymoon. If you are not married, just go. There's no place quite so worthwhile.

I have one last statement to tell about. I was in this tour coach in Tasmania. There were 24 of us who had just come off the plane and boarded the bus. We hadn't been introduced and didn't know one another yet. As we bounced along, our guide ceased his patter to ask us, "Do you travel often?" We didn't answer. Some nodded. Then, a strange thing happened.

"Which is the best place you have been to?" he asked. All of us shouted in unison, "New Zealand!"

Makes you think, doesn't it?

Scientology was never anything more than a scam by L.Ron
Hubbard. Shortly before he founded it,he was quoted by
friends as saying that the easiest way to become rich was to
create a religion.
The fact that he made up such an elaborate, implausible
story and so many people bought it is a testament to human
stupidity.
