Where on the Oregon & NorCal coast should I visit?

This summer I'm traveling from Seaside, OR down to Gualala, CA (all on coastal highway) and I'm need to know the hot spots to not miss on the way! I know I'll be staying in Gold Beach, OR, Arcata, CA, Ft. Bragg, CA and then Gualala, CA. Any suggestions on what's a must see along the way? Thanks!

Oooh, definitely the Redwoods! That's a given, I know, but they're amazing, and this website will give you all the information on hiking trails, camping, etc. http://www.nps.gov/redw/ Those range from Northern CA to mid-CA, although I personally like the N. CA Redwood area a lot better. ;) Newport, Oregon is a great coastal town, it's got an amazing aquarium ( http://www.aquarium.org/ ) and of course a cute downtown area--if you've got time, stop at the wax museum and Ripley's Believe it or Not! Another thing you can do while in Oregon, and this can be accomplished at locations like Gold Beach, is to take a jet boat ride. I think the staples for that area are Rogue River Mail Boats ( http://www.mailboat.com/ ) and Jerry's Rogue River Jet Boats ( http://www.roguejets.com/ ) although I personally prefer the former.

In CA, try and stop by areas like the Hearst Castle in San Simeon ( http://www.hearstcastle.org/ ) and the Madonna Inn, which is known for its wonderfully extravagant tackiness ( http://www.madonnainn.com/ ). I think both of those places are a little further inland, but not by much at all.

I have to say, if you want to visit a beach, do most of your beach visiting in Oregon, because California has limited-access beaches, while you could practically walk up the beach from Brookings, OR, to the WA/OR border. Oh! And lighthouses! There's a zillion around, so make sure to visit at least a couple.

When you're in Ft. Bragg, you should take the Skunk Train ( http://www.skunktrain.com/ ). It's a great ride with some beautiful scenery! Also, while you're in the area, stop off at Mendocino, it's a gorgeous touristy town with a great downtown area! It's also not utterly run-down looking like other coastal towns are.

I hope that helped a bit! Have fun planning your trip!
