Has anyone been to Madeira lately ?
We are going in April and we are thinking of staying at the
Pestania Casino Park Hotel, has anyone ever stayed there, what did you think of it ?
Also what are the prices like in Madeira for Food and Drink etc ?

We go to Madeira every Spring - flying out there on 3rd April this year and will be staying in Canico de Baixo at the Rocamar Hotel (half-way between Funchal and the airport).
Never stayed in the Pestano hotels since we prefer the small old-fashioned places where we know many people. Although we've been to the Casino for a meal and Show. The grill room at the Savoy is upmarket. Everyone is supposed to take tea on the terrace at Reids - overlooking the rock pools.
You will be on the West side of Funchal and easy access to the centre of the City. Most of the hotels have courtesy buses anyway.
Right along the sea front there are restaurants, including one on the Beetles old yacht, and the beer house. We often go to Mar Azule for mid-morning coffee and a brandy. You can get a cheap lunch in the shopping precinct opposite the market over the top of the supermarket.
Food & drinks to try - espetada (esh-pe-tah-da), espada (esh-pah-da), tomato & onion soup with poached egg (beware of the packet stuff!), Madeiran bread which is made partly with potato flour, local drink is poncha (pon-sha) (aquardente with fresh lemon and honey), they serve garlic bread with everything!
Funchal is an adult island - very little for children. Beaches are pebbles except for one small one on the East Coast. If you want a sandy beach you will have to catch the 8.0 am ferry to Porto Santo from Funchal. The port is a favourite destination for big Cruise liners.
Car hire widely available but we never bother - public transport by bus is good and cheap (or taxi).
Food prices are good - go to the Old Town behind the Market - our favourite tiny family restaurant right along the Rua Santa Maria run by Ricardo & Fatima called Gaviao Nova, or slightly more upmarket - O Tapposol does good espetada (meat on skewers) not to be confused with espada (local evil black fish usually served with banana); see them in the fish market. Other fish is expensive.
Go to Monte up the cable car - the Kaffir Lillies will be in bloom in the Monte Palace gardens (an entry charge but often a deal available with cable car) up there and you will probably want to have a go on the sledges. Choose a day when there are no rain clouds over the mountain - take a jumper & pakamac.
If you go on only one island tour, pick the West side one for preference. They now have motorways (!) so different from 30 years ago and the runway has been extended twice since our first visit.
Take a camera to the market on a Saturday. Lots of coffee places outside the cathedral just to watch the World go by.
We never tire of Madeira. Thank-you is obrigado (m) or obrigada (f), por favor (please). Everyone speaks better English than the English!
Crime rate is very low - a traffic accident (and there are quite a few - the Madeirans drive like idots on the mountain roads) - brings the police out in force because they have little else to do.
