used inboard ski boats
I'm looking to buy my first boat, what should I consider before buying?
I have both fresh and salt water driving experience - neboaters responsible for owning/maintaining/servicing though. I'll be using it in fresh water recreationally predominately for cruising with friends, some skiing/tubing, and some fresh water boat diving. I don't want to spend too much as I want to get a feel for it before investing too much, around $3500. Ive narrowed the search down to 2 types So far I've found a few 16"-20" open bow inboard outboards I like. However not sure about what size/type of motor to consider. I've also found a few 20"-21" cruddy cabins I like (would be nice for diving). Again, not sure about enging size, can these handle towing skiers? I'm also going to be looking at old boats due my budget, are older boats a really bad investment (like early to late '80's)? Any info/help would be appreciated. Thx!
Buy used! Buy one that is built for the purpose of how you intend to use it. AND ABOVE ALL ELSE, make sure you take it, and your favorite mechanic on a good "put it through its paces on the water test run" - before you fork over any money.
Furthermore, if $3,500 is all you have to spend on a boat, don't pay near that for it. Hold a $500 or $1,000 back for all the things you will want or need to add to it, of fix it up to make it yours.
"Older" - that is to say, a good used boat can also be a great find, and now (especially on the east coast) is a great time to buy. I spent the winter, slowly cruising up the Florida ICW, and some of the deals I have seen have been so tempting that twice I was really tempted to buy - at a price so low, I could have given my own 32 footer away, (to keep from owning 2) and still made out like a bandit.
It is a fact. . . the very most experienced boaters, buy used. My son (a few years ago) bought a 1979 Albin Vega for $3,000 that was ready to go with all the latest equipment including a EPIRB. He and his girlfriend spent almost 4 years sailing around the world.
For every horror story, there are 100 (or more) great success stories of buying used. It's just like Television news, they don't tell you about all the good stuff that goes on in the world, they just report the bad.
