inboard ski boats
Prospective Boat Purchase - prop to rudder relationship?
Looking at purchasing an unfinished inboard rear mount ( 350 Chev) ski boat approx 19'6"long. Motor set very close to transom and jack shaft is pretty long. On inspecting underneath I was surprised to see the prop (4 blade) is around a metre away from the rudder. Anyone have any thoughts on how this will affect the turning and handling of the boat.? Should the log ( and gearbox) have been set further back in the hull resulting in a shorter jack shaft and thus moving the prop closer to the rudder.? Will the present distance make any difference to the way the boat turns. I believe the hull could be a Spectre.

will it make a difference? yes, it will work better that way.
the rudder does not work by vectoring prop thrust -- it works as a hydrofoil, deflecting relatively calm water to one side and sending the stern in the opposite direction (Newton's third law).
rudder would be less effective in the turbulent waters of the propwash
