Is an 18-foot sailboat safe for travel to the Carribean?
I am purchasing my first sailboat, a Hunter 18.5. My inexperience aside, what are reasonable expectations for me to have regarding ocean travel in this boat?
Some day, I'd like to take the boat down to the Carribean (I live in Charleston, SC and would prefer to depart from there.). Assuming my crew (aka, girlfriend) and I are comfortable with the size of the boat, would it be reasonable to consider this a possibility one day?
You made an excellent choice for your first boat. That is a great boat for day sailing and coastal trips. Although the Hunter 18.5 is a more able boat than many of similar size, it is not a safe boat to take off shore.
On the other hand, you can do the next best thing, some might even say a better thing. You can trailer the boat down to the Florida keys and sail it there. Drawing only 24 inches, it's perfect for the shoals and you'll be able to sail into secluded coves where the bigger boats don't dare to go.

I will be traveling on my sailboat that is a 27' footer. Hunter. Thanks
since its about 600 miles, and you have to thread your way down the Old Bahama Channel and then thru the WIndward Passage south to Aruba, I'd allow 8-12 days....
