I AM IN THE MARKET FOR A USED TRAILERABLE SAILBOAT,?
WHAT BRAND WOULD YOU RECOMMEND FOR A PART TIME LIVE ABOARD,WHAT YEARS SHOULD I LOOK FOR,WHAT IS THE LONGEST YOU CAN TOW ON A TRAILER, WHAT BRAND HAS THE MOST HEAD ROOM IN THE CABIN, I AM NEW TO SAILING AND I WOULD LIKE THE OPINION OF AN EXPERIENCED SAILOR,THANK YOU FOR YOUR INPUT, BAYOUDON
Rather than start with builders and models, I'll start with characteristics I would want on any smaller sailboat I'm staying on for extended stays:
1. Standing headroom. I can't image living on a boat I can't stand up in. I'm okay with maybe having to duck a bit, but I need to stand up.
2. Real head with shutting door. - Let's face it, having to empty a porti potty is not fun or convenitent. Also, I can't image having to kick people out of bed just to use a toilet under the v-birth.
3. Galley - Stove, sink and either ice box or fridge, preferably a fridge.
4. Full lenght bunk, can lie out on and not have to curl up to fit.
The next thing to look at is what kind of sailing does the boat need to handle and how easy does it need to be to trailer and launch the boat. There tends to be an inverse realtionship between these two things.
My first "liveabord" boat was a 26-foot Westerly Centaur which was easily capable of taking me through out the Great Lakes and out to the Bahamas several times. I trailered it to Florida and the Lakes, but it was not what I'd call a trailer sailor, more a trailerable boat. On the other hand, something like a 26-foot Hunter water ballast still has all the features I mentioned above, but is much easier to trailer. It's build a bit lighter so I think it's suited for protected sailing, not crossign the gulf stream. The McGregor 26 is even more light weight in it's construction that way, but if you are going to be mostly at the dock and doing easy sailing, it's one to consider. In between those things are boats such as the Catalina 25 or 27, maybe Cal 24, the precision, etc. I think most boats in the 22-23 foot range are too small to spend any lengthy time on, lacking much of what I stated at the beginning)
The second trailerable boat I used for extended sails was a 26-foot Telstar Trimaran which also met my basic criteria, and was much easier to trailer, but hard to launch. In the end, it didn't handle open ocean sailing as well as I liked.
There is no absolute length limit. It depends on your tow vehicle limits, the characteristics of that particular boat, your tolerence an whether or not you are willing to deal with extra wide permit restrictions. However, you will see few boats with trailers over 26-27 feet, and most of these can be towed with a good standard truck and are with in width restrictions.

Update: If you want a really well built, seaworthy trailerable boat designed to spend time on and is also trailerable, check out the Pacific Seacraft Flicka and Dana, but I warn you, they are not cheap.
