What was the average gasoline prices in 1977 and why are they higher here in 2007?
I wish to know which kind of transportation to get.A horse or what? I have nothing now.No land,no auto, no home, no yacht,no houseboat,not much personal property except the basics,a few pieces of clothes,shoes,a bicycle built for one,a carry case,and sleep at shelters,doors left open to areas,etc.
This depends on whether you adjust for inflation. If you do, modern gas prices are still below the historical peak (in the late 1970s-early 1980s). Here's a handy graph:

This recent bump in gas prices correlates well with a bump in oil prices, suggesting that the surge in crude oil costs is by and large responsible for the high price of gas. With some math you can demonstrate exactly how much. A related problem is the lack of refining capacity in the United States, making it difficult and expensive to get gasoline to market when it's under high demand. Thus, summer surges in gas price. Credit card fees are a relatively tiny component of a gas fill-up, and certainly not responsible for recent price hikes. They're probably saving as much money by not requiring labor (cashiers) to run the pumps.
As to what sort of transportation to get - stick with your bike, if you live in a city. What more do you need? Maybe a subway ticket now and then...
