How much does a decent,2nd hand mobile home/houseboat cost?
I'm looking at cheaper living strategies at the moment.
Mobile homes in the 28 to 32 foot range are about 12,000 to 20,000 dollars. Houseboats are twice that.

Has anyone ever lived on a houseboat?
I have always loved boating and the ocean, and we have a very small skiff (not big enough to live on) but it has been a dream of mine, since childhood, lo live on a boat, for a least a year. When it's cold, sail to somewhere tropical, see lots of countries and meet a lot of people.
I just want to know- has anyone ever done it?
What was the cost?
Did you take your children, or were you solo?
Did you hire a crew, or did you know how to do it yourself, more or less?
I lived on a Catlina 27 for three years and an Ericson 38 for 2 years. There is NO SPACE. So you don't get to have very many things. Everything eventually gets wet from the moisture in the air or water in the bilge. So your clothes that don't get worn often end up moldy. Anything metal eventually gets rusty. You have to be able to tie EVERYTHING down when you get underway, you will quickly find out what stuff wasn't tied down well once your underway. Refrigeration is rare and costly so you probably will have an ice box. This means that you constantly have to buy ice. You eat a lot of canned or dried foods like Top Ramen or spaghetti.
The good things:
1. Everybody in the boating community is friendly.
2. Everybody in the boating community is a drunk.
3. When you light up the BBQ in port, you will be innundated by people that want to join the party.
4. It was way cheaper than an apartment.
5. Women loved my boat.
6. Everybody thinks it's way cool that you live on a boat if they haven't done it. (If they have then they will know that it sounds way cooler than it really is.)

Beware high brokerage costs, with the right research and advice you will successfully purchase your ideal houseboat.
