What is the usually base pay for a Kia car salesman?
I'm going to start a new job soon, and would love any advice! I'm sure I'll have the opportunity to negotiate salary and I'm just doing some research. Thanks
"I'm sure I'll have the opportunity to negotiate salary" --- Doubtful. This is a very different type of entry-level position than you have in mind.
You'll be paid commissions based upon what you sell, based upon a scale set by the management of the dealership. This is usually contingent on the profit a dealer makes on the deal. They will have a minimum commission (called a "mini") for deals that don't clear much profit (or lose money) that can range from $50 to $250.
If you don't clear enough commissions, you will be paid minimum wage. If this happens for two months or so, you won't be employed there for very long.
Some dealerships have moved to paying their sales staff on a set salary, but there are always stipulations... no dealer pays their staff to sit around.
You don't walk into a car dealership and demand a salary. Only the most seasoned and successful salespeople are able to negotiate their pay structure and schedule. Until you reach that level, you will be paid on the same scale as everyone else.
If you're serious about this, go in and learn everything you can about the business. Be excited, be punctual (the odd hours can wear on those with very liberal work ethics), and always put your customer's needs first.
Some advice:
1) If you go in arrogant and demanding, you'll get swallowed up by management in no time.
2) You'll find several guys that stand around, smoke like chimneys, and gripe and moan about everything... from the "greenpeas" (newbies), the lost commissions, the customer who really got to them, the tower manager they hate, etc... stay away from these guys. All they want is for you to get disenchanted and leave so that they have less competition on the board.
3) Don't expect this to be an 8-to-5 job. You'll work very long hours, most weekends, and usually will go "bell-to-bell" (open to close) on most days. Be as energetic as possible.
4) Take time to learn all you can about every facet of the dealership. Ask the finance manager about his/her job, the service manager, the customer service manager, etc. You'll be surprised at how much goes into each day at a dealership.
5) Respect the unwritten rules of the dealership when it pertains to sales (rotation of "ups", dress code, splitting sales, etc.) but know that this is about YOUR income and livelihood. Don't let other sales staff push you around.
6) If a customer really likes you, they will recommend you to family and friends. Always be mindful of this... it can get you through slow months when you have referrals coming by to see you.
7) Some new salespeople worry about so much that has nothing to do with their livelihood, such as "what demo do I get to drive" (don't expect a demo... this is an older practice usually reserved for the most successful folks), or "can I take that cool sports car to lunch" or similar stuff... these people don't usually last very long and are rooted-out quickly.
This business is not for everyone. If you are miserable, get out.
It takes thick skin to survive in this business.
