How well would twin 25hp outboards push a 34ft. cabin cruiser?
Not well at all. . . It is far too little to lift and push so much. It would also be very unsafe. It would take a lot of hp to make that boat move - and sometimes - you really need it to move quickly, even if only for a few feet. A following sea, another boat's wake - could easily blow you into another boat, or dock, or aground. . . and you would not have the power to prevent it.
I realize the concern for fuel efficiency. . . but you won't get it, by simply under-powering your boat.
Here is why: It requires far less power to move a full-displacement hull (sailboat hull) through the water at speed, then it does to move a semi-displacement planing hull. The hull on a 34' Cabin Cruiser is a semi-displacement planning hull, which is designed so that much of the slow (or low) speed - works to "lift" the boat up on plane. Comparatively, very little of your hp is being used to actually move the vessel forward. As a result, at low speed, most of your "horse power" will be used trying to lift your vessel's weight to the top of the water, and this is not efficient at all.
If you want to go long-distance cruising - and do so on the very most fuel efficient method possible - I suggest you get a live aboard size sailboat - Even if you completely remove the mast, and never actually "sail" this vessel - and only use power (as quite a few people do, by the way) your fuel usage will be at an absolute minimum.
I cruise America's Great Loop every year. . . I am now doing it in a heavy 32' live a-board sailboat with a 9.9hp outboard. At maximum cruising (hull) speed, I am averaging slightly less than 0.4 gallons per hour. Currently, this trip is costing me an average of $15.00 in fuel for every full day of cruising.
Many 36 and 40 foot sailboats have 25hp auxiliary engines. . . I've seen some with 10 and 15hp kickers such as mine.
According to my calculations, (and I am guessing your beam) you will need about a 160 hp to keep your 34' cabin cruiser out of harms way. . .
