good family boats
Does having a family and joining the Coast Guard mix?
I am very interested in joining the Coast Guard. Every guy in my family has served in one of the five branches, and I love boats and being on the water, so I picked the Coast Guard. Only thing is I am newly married and have a 3 year old son. I'm getting a lot of conflicting info on whether or not I have to travel a lot,whether I have a choice on where I go, and how long at a time I will be away from my family. I don't normally trust recruiters because in the past they have come accross as car salesmen,so I'm hoping the get the real deal from someone who know what they are talking about. Please help me with my decision. Thanks.

Military life is not for everyone. When you sign the contract, you must realize that the job will come first. If you are at a SAR (search and rescue) station, and the call comes to go out - you need to be there. Period. Having a sick child or having a leaky faucet or marital problems is not an excuse.
If you are on-board a ship, you and your wife need to realize that you have a job to do. Can she operate the home front with you gone? If you have a weak marriage, chances are you are not going to be happy. Neither will she. Separation can be disastrous in that situation.
The upside is that there are more ashore assignments than underway assignments. Remember this is the COAST GUARD. I cannot tell you how many times I had to remind people of that. I would hear: "But I don't want to get underway, my wife is going to be upset." Or: "The recruiter said that I wouldn't have to be on a ship."
What is wrong with those two examples? You signed a contract. In that contract, you WILL NOT see a stipulation that you will not get stationed on a ship, or that you will not receive orders overseas (few families that went to Alaska or Hawaii have argued the orders).
Please keep in mind that although there are more land billets than sea billets, you may get stationed on a ship. Part of that also depends on your rate (what job you have). And the rate depends on how you did on the tests.
Like I asked previously - about the wife being independent: If she is, it can be a great experience. You are a team, and there are going to be times when you are gone for duty or other reason. She has to be able to run the house.
I have known hundreds of couples who made the CG a career. Has it always been easy? Hell no. Of course, neither is a 9-5 job. Which brings up another perk. If you don't like your boss at a civilian job - what are your choices? Quit? In the service - unless you both arrive at the same time - one of you will be leaving within a couple of years. That is a big plus!
Talk to your recruiter. If you are near a CG installation, ask him to put you and your wife in contact with the Ombudsman. The Ombudsman can give you up-to-date information and answer questions that you and your wife may have concerning things like: health care. Pay. Housing. Dealing with the Command. Other support groups for the CG families.

Magnificent video. Really enjoyed watching it. But on the other hand so sad to see what is happening to our fishing industry. Thanks NMFS. I guess I was right quite a while ago when I said it's as if they want to put the family boats out of business & start going to big corporations. Sorry big guys, ( here I go making enemies again ) but give me the littler family boats back. What a crying shame. I have to stop here. My eyes are filling up. Say no more.

I am a teen and i would deffinetly choose carnval i yhave been on six cruises and by far carnival was the most fun it was alo of ffun there was many activities. Carnival also has very good deals.THey have many pools,and geat shows .I would scratch Norweiga off your list it is to expensive . I wouldnt cosider holland american or norweigan they are usually more for the older people. BUTi would say the bet option is Carnival and the second best is Royal Carribean.Have fun.
