why does my argentine b&w tegu spend most of his time in his hide?
it's about 85-90 inside the tank with a 100 basking spot and 55-65 humidity. the hide stays around 83 with a slightly higher humidity. i just got him yesterday and when i first put him in the tank he walked around and explored but all day today he just stayed in his hide.
We'll he's new, and like most reptiles he will need an adjustment period to his new tank, give it about a week before handling multiple amounts of time a day and just let him settle in.
Your basking spot is a little low 105f is the coolest you want it at the basking site, trust me that slight 5f bump will mean alot... Make sure you provide uvb as we'll, Mercury vapor bulbs are preferred with these guys and your tank sounds big enough to use one.
Also check your temps, because i use a160watt mercury vapor bulb in a 75gallon and my basking site is a easy 112f for my tegu....
Tegu's also hide a lot during the hottest part of the day even if its being housed indoors, that's why its important to mimic outside lighting. and they usually only bask in the morning and right after being feed, its important that you learn your tegu's basking schedule and follow it.
Also does he have his Green head still? Because Normal Hatchlings in the U.S are not due to start hatching out until another two weeks.. If he was born this year,has a slight green head still or has a full green head then he may be an import, and if that's the case then he may be trying to hibernate, its important you call the person you brought him from and ask when it was born... But the import thing is just a theory and something for you to consider, but i would need to know the hatch date or see a pic or give me a description of size and color before i make a decision on that.
But this sounds like average tegu behavior just give him time and move slowly, try to work in the enclosure as much as possible, cleaning water dish, misting, spot cleaning exc, eventually he'll get curious and approach, you can try dozens of free roaming and taming exercises, one is to put a piece of worn clothing under the hide, this way he will start to associate your sent with safety.
