fountain boats for sale
I'm going to Rome next summer, any good tips? EX: bad and good parts of town, where to stay, etc?
So I'm going to Rome, Italy next summer and I know a few things I want to do, but I want some advice from people that have been there or live there. Now, I am defiantly going to the Vatican because I am a devout Catholic. I know most places like the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, Colosseum, etc.
Where should I stay? I want air conditioning and modern Appliances.
Where should I not go? Like places that are dangerous. I heard Termini is kinda bad.
Should I rent a car or take public transportation?
My friends have told me to dress European to avoid any problems with people that might want to rob a tourist. Should I listen to them?
Plus, I hear there are wonderful sights outside of Rome too, whats in a days driving distance from Rome that is Interesting?

2 weeks in Rome? that's quite a long period)
- Hotel in Rome: i usually stay in the area of Termini, i prefer a luxury B&B to a standard hotel. Termini has the "fame" to be not too safe but i was there 3 times and never had even the impression not to be safe. Distance from Fori Imperiali is around 1 km, Colosseo is 1,5 km, underground is at 500 meters. I usually stay at http://www.bed-and-breakfast-rome.com (get the luxury room very nice) or at http://www.relaislamaison.com
- Hotel in Ostia: since you're going to stay for a 2 weeks, why don't you think to stay in Ostia? If you will be there in August, Rome might be empty and boring, Ostia it's the seaside part of Rome, around 15 km from Rome (by metro it's 20 minutes to EUR area). You can find lot of 3 or 4 stars hotel. Seaside is ok, nothing to do with Sardinia beaches, but nightlife is good, place is lively and full of restaurants. This suggestion is mainly if you are little younger and looking for some lively atmoshepere
- Car: to visit Rome, i would not advise to move by car, except for August (when city is empty). In case you go for a car, get an hotel with a parking space, since might not so easy to park. If you want to move out of Rome, you can rent a car for this extra time
- Visit to Rome: to see all the most famous monuments of Rome, you might need 2/3 days. Downtown (from Colosseum though Fori Imperiali to Fontana di Trevi to Spanish step migh be 2/3 hours tour). Vatican can be up to 1 day (if you go inside Cappella Sistina and Vatican Museum) plus up to the Top of SanPietro. For lunch and also dinner, don't miss the typical place of Trastevere (lot of roman restaurants). Another famous restautant is Gigetto Lo Zozzone where you should try "carciofo alla giudea" (jewish artichoke). Shopping: in Via Condotti you will find all the most expensive shops. Now it's sales time (started from beginning of July), so you can buy some nice clothes and 50% of price. You can move also little out of Rome (Ostia antica with all Roman Theathe ) if you have lucky and have some more time to enjooy
- Other places to see: in the area of Rome, you can go to Sperlonga (very nice seaside place around 100 km from Rome) or you can go to Isole Pontine (maybe by sailing boat, they arrange 2 days tour, see for example those guys: http://www.viaggiavventurenelmondo.it. Very nice could be a visit to Umbria region too (200 km from Rome, to see Assisi, Perugia, Orvieto, you can sleep in a country farm resort and travel from there, spending 3/4 days)
- Dress: you can dress as you want. Just avoid gold or expensive watches, jewellery that will attract attention anywhere in the world. Rules are the same everywhere, not only in Rome) Take with you some few cash for daily expenses and use credit card only in good shops or hotels for your main purchases
- Drinks: just a note, since some of my friends where surprised) when you go to a bar, price for a drink at the bar is different from price of the drink setting outside at the table) sometime, in the most famous places, a coffee might cost 8 euro sitting at the table, while will cost 1 euro at the bar) just mind it)
