Fish cops? You're talking about game wardens, right? Go**amn.

I've never ran into a game warden like that here in California (most of them are pretty well educated on the fish and wildlife) but I sure as sh*t have run into rangers like that up at Casitas!

Looks like in the state Flori-DUHHH, the department of fish and game or department of natural resources or whatever you guys call it will hire any dumb schmuck right off the street.

Who do you complain to? The state of course! They're state employees.

Just one word- Wow!

#1. Many times when you see TWO Marine Patrol in a boat one is being trained. Most "trainees" are about "green" as a Granny Smith Apple. I once had a "trainee" try to give me a ticket for keeping a Sea-Trout when I KNEW it was a Sand Trout. In a "good 'ole boy way" I insisted that dumb-shite call in another officer before he wrote me up.

Officer Dumbshite- "Sir, do you realize that Spec Trout is currently out of season?"

Me- "Sure do! That's why I don't have any!"

Officer Dumbshite- "Sir, then what is this?"

Me- "I'm perty sure that's a Sand Trout. Same family different fish. I've got a rules and regs book in my dash with pics of the fish if you want to take a gander at it? I've been fishing these waters for 30 years and I gotta tell ya this is the Sand Trout season. Is officer Bass still working the Mayport area?"

OFF DS- " Ugh………hold on a moment."

That's when he goes back to his boat and calls in"reinforcements"….(wink).

An older MP guy arrives SEES the Sand Trout gives me the "new recruit" BS and off I go.

BTW- "Officer Bass" worked as a Highway Patrolman 20 years earlier. I was just "dropping a name" to remind him that I MIGHT know people he DIDN'T know…….its always a good idea to establish the "Hey, I'm a respectable, law-abiding citizen, WHO MIGHT be the cousin of someone who could squash you like a bug!" attitude……wink-lol)

#2. Marine Patrol and Coast Guard generally have NO USE for "critters"! I KNOW it sounds counter-productive, (trying to nail you for a size limit and then "bolting off" in their boat like they were Crocket & Tubbs from Miami Vice) but it's TRUE! MP officers ALWAYS have a chip on their shoulders. I don't know why-but I have a theory:

A. They couldn't hack being a regular cop so they decided to continue going to school and become a conservation officer. Once they GOT the job, they thought they'd be busting drug-runners, DUI's and illegal immigrants all day, (MAYBE EVEN some Pirates!! LOL); anything to "pull the gun"! The reality is- long monotonous days on the water; it's HOT; people generally don't want to TALK because your just a "nuisance"; NO GUN-PLAY! NO excitement! AND you've got to fill out PAPER-work, clean the boats, and try to look "cool" doing it!

Now, the OLDER, more mature, guys aren't this way. And some MP's are "nerdy smart" about fish species and other marine life. Those guys I respect! I've sat and BSed with certain MP's and they (after I established I was a SPORTSMAN with a conscience and not a "Fillet Hider" raping our environment) told me info and areas to try fishing I would have never guessed.

So, it's partly an "age thing".

#3. MP's generally think anyone fishing from shore, (without a boat), are "trash". I've had it happen to me MANY times!!!! Even here in MN!

Story- 2 years ago I was playing a gig at a casino near Ely MN, (I supplement my income by playing saxophone in local clubs and casinos) and decided to hit some shorelines looking for Trout, Bass and Walleye. I wasn't the only one! The park I decided to fish near was crawling with fishermen, so I decided to hike into a new area to get away from the crowd. I managed to get out on a boulder and was having some success. A boat came by and watched me pull in a couple Walleye, (which I immed threw BACK- I didn't have a kitchen to cook them in- I was staying in the casino in a hotel room). There were quite a few boats on the lake that day and I watched from a GREAT distance, (this is a BIG lake), a number of boats getting check by the DNR patrol.

All of a sudden he makes a B-line to ME! There's TWO of them, an older male officer and a (looked like she was 15) female officer. To make a LONG story short, they read me the riot act- They were esp curious WHERE the Walleye I caught WENT, (Nobody in MN throws a legal Walleye AWAY! lol). I have NEVER been treated so rudely in all my life! They even had the audacity to ask me if I had a stringer hidden somewhere! It was MIND-Blowing!

Because there were boulders in the way they could not get close enough to me, (on shore), so I could pass them my drivers license. They told me to "Stay there sir. We will be by in another hour or so to check the surroundings and your license".

I waited 10 minutes after they left.

F- them! It was getting DARK and I had to go to work! Wait an HOUR for them? They must have LOST their MINDS!

Besides, I didn't have any BAIT! I didn't have a cooler! All I had with me was a fanny pack of lures and my fav rod & reel. I suspect that the guys in the boat that had WATCHED me EARLIER catch all those fish told a "whopper" to the DNR to get them off THEIR back……I just don't know.

But, it's ironic that "in the land of nice, MN" I had my worst experience with a Marine patrol officer.

BUT, this type of thing is not unusual for Shoreline anglers. I've heard MANY story's and had some other experiences with (oops– I've run out of room)

Sounds like you had yourself a rough day. Getting checked out by the cops and losing your camera to the water. Still, a bad day fishing is better than a good day at work/school. Good luck fishin'!
