How would you make a fiberglass boat?
I would like to build a few boats for extra money, but I need to make them a little cheaper in order to compete. Any ideas?
Building fiberglass boats requires a lot of technical equipment and a lot of legal licensing. Most glass boats are constructed from the outside in, in molds. The glass is adhered together using polyester or vinyl ester, and those materials are just about the only ones that offer both water resistance and the proper weight and density. Unfortunately, both materials require the use of resins and catalysts, which are expensive to purchase, ship and store.
If you're hoping for "cheaper" materials, fiberglass is probably not the best choice. It's an "economies of scale" issue, and one would have to produce an awful lot of boats to make the materials, processes and licensing cost effective.

I saw Jaws as a kid and that pretty much ruined CATS for me. I prefer tough fiberglass boats (although now that I think about it, they didn't fair too well in the movies either) Oh well, I've been on 'em since I was a baby and I'm still here to tell about it. I'll stick with good solid boats, thanks, which reminds me, I have to call DMV to register the one we received as a gift. Things to see, people to do…
