what size/type/brand of boat should we buy to boat on the ocean?
Because of the previous questions I asked, we have lost a lot of hope that our 27 foot Azure bow-rider will survive the Pacific Ocean. What kind of boat should we be looking at to venture out to say Catalina Island. Would some sort of center console be better? What is the difference between those and our boat? What if we decide we want to sleep on the boat, what do we do then?
As I've stated in some of my answers to you, an Express Cruiser would do very well in the ocean and on a lake. I own a Sea Ray 260 Sundancer which in reality finishes out at 28' LOA. The boat sleeps 4 people comfortably and has a full bathroom, kitchen (galley), heat/AC, hot/cold running water, TV/DVD player and most of the comforts of home. If the water gets rough, we put up the icing glass curtains and we remain dry and warm.
A Center Console is fine for a day ride, but you'll all be exposed to the elements which in the Pacific Ocean, can be miserable! You'll most likely have a head on board, but nothing else. If you plan on only fishing then this would be a good choice, but since you have now asked about sleeping onboard, that changes everything.
There are lots of really good boats that will work for you and your family, you'll just need to figure out just what your needs are first. Like I said earlier, I have three very different boats. Each has a purpose and that's it. There's no one boat that does it all. If you'd like you can email me and I can assist you along the way.
