evolution powerboats
im trying to buy a boat so is gasoline or diesel cheaper?
just want to know what would be cheaper to have.
I'm taking your question in a broader sense. In pleasure boats, the cost of diesel is hard to justify when compared to gasoline. However as it turns out it is really a technology evolution. There where relatively small diesel engines that lend themselves to auxiliary power for sailboats, but there was only a one gas engine that found wide use in sailboats. The Atomic 4 was not really well designed for a sailboat power.
Conversely, until relatively recently there where few higher HP (165 to 325HP) mid-range engines that where diesel. So, gas engines dominated the pleasure boat market for a very long time. The "small and big block" engines performed well and had the power range to make the expense of diesel hard to justify. As the price of fuel climbed, at a time when the technological breakthroughs in both power curve and cleanliness............have now closed the gap. It's still difficult to justify on purely safety grounds. Gasoline still rules, but there are more and more boats being delivered with diesel engines.
So, if you are buying a powerboat Gas! Sailboat, diesel.
