How is the generator connected to the jet engine in a passenger jet?
I know that in some systems, the engine drives a hydraulic pump that then drives a hydraulic uh... "motor" that turns the generator, but can you please explain this to me in more detail? I especially can't understand how the hydraulic pump is connected to the engine - is it connected to the shaft in the middle of the engine (the one that connects the compressor and turbine blades)? If so, how? Doesn't it turn at tens of thousands of RPM?
This is really my question - in a nutshell, how do you connect a generator or pump to a jet engine?
Good responses above. Not all engines include constant speed drives (CSDs) however. Some engines drive the generator directly and use a voltage regulator to maintain proper power to the aircraft. In this case, the gearbox is driven by a bevel gear on the HP shaft through a smaller, perpendicular, accessory drive shaft to an external gearbox, which then uses a series of bevel and spur gears to reduce the speed by roughly an order of magnitude to several accessories, including a starter/generator, hydraulic pump, oil pump, fuel control, etc. By the time the speed reduction occurs, there is not much difference between flight idle and max speed at the generator pad, so a CSD is just added weight for little justification.

Commercial planes use turbofan engines, Keep in mind it is not only thrust that propels the plane foreword but the difference in pressure in front and the back of the engine, you can say that the plane is actually sucked foreword.
It will also restrict the amount of air that flows into the engine which in turn affect the amount of thrust at the back, just as you guessed.
The simple method to remember how car engine or jet engine works is: Suck – Squeeze – Bang – Blow.
Air (and importantly the Oxygen in the air!) is Sucked into the engine from outside.
The air is Squeezed to a higher pressure to concentrate the Oxygen.
Bang – the fuel is added to the compressed air, then ignited (burnt).
As the fuel and air burns hot it expands, either pushing on a surface (a piston in a car engine) or pushing out the back of a nozzle (in a jet engine) – this is the Blow that causes something to move and makes the engine work.
